Here is a list of Japanese terms I use fairly commonly in my journal entries that may need a little explanation:

dojo- 道場 - training hall
The place where judo is practiced.

judo-gi- 柔道着 - judo uniform
A thick 100% cotton uniform worn when practicing judo.

moto-dachi- もとだち - The person who stays up.
The person who stays up with several others for several consecutive rounds in either tachi-waza or ne-waza.

ne-waza- 寝技 - ground technique
All techniques done in judo from the ground position (i.e. hold-downs, turn-overs, armlocks, chokes).

randori- らんどり - free practice
The type of practice where both judo players are trying to do techniques on each other.

sensei- 先生 - teacher
Teachers of all walks of life in Japan, as well as an honourific title for other respectable professionals, such as doctors.

tachi-waza- 立ち技 - standing technique
All techniques done in judo from the standing position (i.e. throws).

uchi-komi- 打込み - waza practice
Practicing the entries for throws without throwing the partner, or practicing ne-waza techniques without resistance from one's partner.
